Buy the bins last, always

Measuring after you sort saves returns, money, and the drawer that almost closes.

Organized drawer with clear bins

The most common thing I see in a first session is a stack of bins that don't fit — bought with good intentions, before anyone knew what was going into them. Containers are the last step, not the first.

Here's why. Until you sort, you don't know the volume of each category. Until you edit, that volume changes. And until you measure the actual shelf depth, rod height, and drawer interior, you're guessing at dimensions that are almost always off by an inch or two — which is exactly the amount that keeps a drawer from closing.

The right order is: empty, sort, edit, measure, then buy. In my sessions, I measure at the end of the first visit and send a specific product list — sizes, quantities, and links — so nothing gets returned.

A few things worth spending on when you get there: clear acrylic dividers for folded stacks, shallow drawer inserts for socks and intimates, mesh bags for swim separates, and matching slim hangers. A few things that rarely earn their keep: oversized cloth bins on high shelves, anything with a lid you have to lift with two hands, and label makers used before the categories have settled.

Buy the bins last. Your drawer will close, and your money stays in your pocket.
